Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best historic walking tour in St. Paul?

The Minnesota Historical Society’s Summit Avenue Walking Tours cover 1.5 miles of Gilded Age mansions in 90 minutes, starting at the James J. Hill House. Tickets cost $16 to $20. The last 2026 tours are October 24, 25 and 31; the free State Capitol guided tours run year-round (source: MNHS: Summit Avenue Walking Tours).

Is there a historic walking tour in Minneapolis?

Yes. The free St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail is a 1.8-mile self-guided loop with signs and kiosks that crosses the Mississippi on the Stone Arch Bridge, past the mill ruins and Mill City Museum. In summer, rangers lead walks at the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock (source: MNHS: Mill City Museum Area Attractions).

Does Minnesota have a National Heritage Area or National Historic Trail?

No. The National Park Service lists no National Heritage Area in Minnesota, and its Minnesota page lists no National Historic Trail; the North Country trail there is a scenic trail. For history on foot, start with MNHS walking tours, Capitol tours and self-guided battlefield and treaty-site trails (source: NPS: Discover National Heritage Areas).
